Iran expects to hold more nuclear talks: foreign minister

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran expects to hold more talks with world powers on its nuclear program following an inconclusive round of negotiations in Istanbul earlier this month, its foreign minister said in a newspaper interview published on Monday.

The failure of the talks to secure a breakthrough over Tehran's uranium enrichment, which the West fears is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, has raised international concerns that Israel may carry out a military strike.

"I can't say it with certainty but if everything proceeds normally then there should be further negotiations," Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi told Austria's Der Standard.

"A breakdown (in talks) is in nobody's interests. The gaps can only be closed through talking."

Salehi said, however, that Iran's right to uranium enrichment had to be recognized from the outset. "It's a matter of principle," he said.

Tehran denies it is attempting to develop atomic weapons, saying its nuclear program is for civilian energy purposes.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said earlier this month that Iran's proposals made in talks with the so-called P5+1 group of the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany were "non-starters".

Israel is widely thought to be the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons capability and, citing threats made by Iran's leaders to destroy it, has made it clear it would attack the Islamic state if diplomacy failed.

Salehi said Iran did not want to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway at the neck of the Gulf through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports pass.

"The Persian Gulf is a lifeline for Iran and for the region and for the international community. We are rational. We do not want to cut off this lifeline and cause suffering," he said.

"But if we are forced, then Iran must do everything to defend its sovereignty and its national interests."

Military analysts have cast doubt on Iran's willingness to block the slender waterway, given the massive U.S.-led retaliation it would likely incur.

Fans are naturally more interested in players and coaches than front-office employees.

But in Arizona, the intrigue over the firing of a salary cap administrator creates questions about the direction of the franchise and its leadership.

On its face, getting rid of Justin Casey is a line of agate type, the kind of transaction no one notices. But inside Cardinal headquarters, it has apparently created a bit of a divide.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports the move was ?deeply felt inside the team?s headquarters in Tempe,? and could hint at a split between General Manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Somers said it would be ?hard to find a Cardinals employee more well-liked by his co-workers? than Casey, and there was no previous sense he was bad at his job.?But he was also close with Whisenhunt, as the two occasionally played golf together.

Was that the reason he was fired, as a power play by Graves?

?That?s ridiculous,? Graves told Somers, when asked about the speculation. ?Ken and I have a wonderful working relationship, and we?re on the same page in respect to improving as an organization, improving as a team and working together.?

Casey himself declined comment to Somers, and Graves didn?t elaborate on why he was replaced. There were other moves made in the front office as well, so perhaps it was part of a larger organizational shift.

Casey was replaced by Sean Castle, a CPA with no NFL experience.

?Our focus is on being a championship organization and becoming a championship team,? Graves said. ?Every year in that quest, I?m evaluating where we are, from a personnel standpoint, and assessing new talent out there.

?What I have been able to do in assessing candidates is really get a feel for the skill sets people have and realize what services they can provide us that we don?t have. And sometimes at the end of that evaluation, you come to the conclusion that you?re better off making changes.?

That?s all well and good, and there could easily be a reason for all this. But when moves like this are made without full explanation, the vacuum quickly fills with conspiracy theories. Whether there?s a Graves-Whisenhunt split or not, the impression does no good for the organization, and barring evidence to the contrary, folks will begin to believe it whether it?s true or not.

ReDigi takes out loans as EMI legal battle continues | Daily Serps

As controversial MP3 resale service ReDigi continues to battle a lawsuit launched by EMI, Digital Music News has noted that the tech start up has recently secured an extra $760,000 in funding.

However, the money has come from loans rather than equity-based investment, meaning it will have to paid back with interest down the line. Presumably that means that the company needs new monies to develop its product while paying ongoing legal fees relating to the EMI case, but that, given the uncertainty the litigation creates, few investors would be willing to put money into the firm in the traditional way.

As previously reported, the legalities of a website that enables people to resell used MP3s are somewhat ambiguous, which prevented EMI from securing a summary judgement in its favour, but which could make any full court hearing time-consuming and expensive. ReDigi insists its service complies with US copyright law, mainly by relying on the so called ?first sale doctrine?, while EMI argues that ReDigi just helps others to commit copyright infringement.

While ReDigi won round one of the legal battle ? when EMI failed to get its summary judgement ? at the time various commentators wondered whether the start-up had the funds available to fight such a complicated lawsuit, even if ultimately the courts ruled in its favour. such speculation grew when the firm?s lawyer quit the case, implying some bills remained unpaid. But the tech firm insisted it could see the case to its conclusion, adding that it had switched lawyers to bring in representatives particularly experienced in this area of law.

The new loans will help with that plan presumably, though whether it will be enough to allow ReDigi to weather this storm and grow its business remains to be seen.

Top Venezuelan embassy official killed in Kenya

NAIROBI (Reuters) - The head of Venezuela's embassy in Kenya was murdered at her official residence in the capital, police and foreign affairs ministry officials said on Friday.

Police said they believed the charge d'affaires, Olga Fonseca, was strangled to death in the white mansion surrounded by tropical trees and an electric fence in the exclusive Runda neighborhood.

"We received reports that she was found dead in the house on her bed. What we have seen is that she has been strangled," Anthony Kibuchi, Nairobi area police commander, told reporters outside Fonseca's residence.

She started her job on July 15, the ministry of foreign affairs said.

Venezuelan embassy officials in Kenya were unavailable to comment.

Google Earth, Maps get new high-res aerial and satellite imagery

3D City View for iOS isn't the only update from the Google Maps and Earth team this week, they've also spruced up their services with new imagery. Fresh high-resolution aerial and satellite photos have been added for a roster of 25 cities and 72 countries or regions, ranging from Antelope Wells, New Mexico to Zimbabwe. In addition, seven international locales and 21 US cities received the 45-degree view treatment, letting you gaze at skylines from a different perspective. The maps are already available, so you can peruse new satellite images of London's Olympic Park and Village just in time for the festivities. Genki Tummy: My Baby Shower

Mike and I are so fortunate to have such wonderful friends here in Texas! We've been here for a little under three years and have made some great friends at work and outside of work. Here's some pictures from my baby shower.?

Cake Pops! Look how pretty they are! One of my co-workers and her daughter made this cute tasty treats! Thanks Pat!

A couple of my friends planned and hosted a baby shower for me a couple of weekends ago. I am so overwhelmed by all their generosity and our baby girl is lucky that she now has more than everything she needs.? We also cannot forget to mention all the friends and family that we have back home who have been checking up on us and letting us know that we are in their thoughts.

Our baby girl is so spoiled and she has not even been born yet! She has tons of clothes, toys, and safety items from all her aunties and uncles. We now have her crib, mattress, infant seat, stroller, swing, boppy, bumbo, bath tub, teether, nasal aspirator, first aid kit, creams, bottles, towels, receiving blankets, diapers (disposable and cloth), activity mat educational toys, food maker, hats, socks, and the list goes on and on!? I hope she likes pink, lambs, bunnies, and carrots because that's sort of the theme her mommy has been planning for her.

My shower had a Candyland theme to it. Look at this cake that my friends slaved over. ? So cute!

We also decorated onesies, bibs and burp cloths. Yes, I have some math and science-y friends who are starting our baby out with science-y onesies. ?I guess that's what happens when most of your friends are scientists or engineers. ?Hopefully our baby will enjoy math and science!

My sister asked me if we're all prepared and ready...and actually I think Mike and I are. ?I'm sure that there are a bunch of things that we are missing and have not thought off, but for the most part we are at a comfortable place. ?Plus, it does help that we have wonderful and supportive friends and family!

I recently returned from Burma, known officially as Myanmar. When I was executive director of Amnesty International USA (1994-2006), I would not have been granted a visa to enter Myanmar because of Amnesty?s criticism of the government. This time I received a visa upon arrival at the airport in Yangon.

Similarly, Aung San Suu Kyi, the revered leader of the country?s democracy movement, had chosen not to leave the country since 1989 for fear she would not be allowed back in. This time, having recently been elected to Parliament and assured of her right to return, she was in Thailand on her first travel outside the country in more than twenty-four years. I could finally get in at the same time she finally got out.

These are but two of the ways Myanmar has changed since March 2011, when general turned ?civilian,? Thein Sein, became president. Whether these and other relaxations of authoritarianism will last is naturally the first question on the mind of every Myanmar citizen. Is all this change simply a reflection of one man?s (or one faction?s) strategic predilections, or does it signal a genuine opening?

What is pretty clear is that the sanctions, economic and diplomatic, that the West and some of Myanmar?s neighbors had brought to bear against the country had some effect. That?s not because the government cared about the impact of those sanctions on the welfare of the people. It?s because those who had made themselves rich with the government?s help (Transparency International rates Myanmar one of the most corrupt nations on earth) realized that, with the West closed off to them, they had few places to invest their ill-gotten gains.

Whatever the motivation of the powerful, the people are ever so cautiously beginning to exercise their newfound freedom. Transitional democracies are notoriously unstable ? see Egypt ? in part because no one knows exactly what the new rules are or who the ultimate decision-makers will be. The press is flexing its poorly toned muscles by covering some of the controversies like it never has before.

On the one hand, this means there is more civic space for organized dissent, at least at the local level. One village, for example, in Myanmar had been beleaguered for years by the military appropriating sand for its own uses that the villagers needed for theirs. With the new melody of ?people power? playing in their ears, the villagers sent an anonymous protest letter to the military, which, astonishingly, stopped stealing the sand. This was not, of course, because the military had suddenly become enlightened. It was because it couldn?t know for sure that higher-ups might not heed the villagers? wishes and punish the military?s excesses.

Swimming robot to help future Olympians

Japanese researchers are building a human-like robotic swimmer that could help athletes swim faster, or at least wear speedier swimsuits.

Among other things, the Swumanoid will give researchers insight into the propulsive force created by a swimmer?s hands, which is difficult to gauge with sensors on an actual human, Motomu Nakashima from the Tokyo Institute of Technology told the video news website Diginfo TV.?

The robot is modeled after a competitive swimmer, built to half scale. Waterproof motors reproduce swimming motions. It currently swims about three times slower than the?current 100-meter freestyle record-holder,?Brazilian Cesar Cielo.?

Nakashima said the robot will find use in sports research. It might also serve as a rescue robot. Given other developments on the robot lifeguard front, it?s beginning to look like a favorite summer job is about to be automated.

NEW YORK (AP) ? J.C. Penney is changing its pricing ? again.

Just six months after the mid-priced department store chain got rid of the hundreds of sales it offered each year in favor of everyday lower pricing, it is reversing course.

Penney on Feb. 1 began using a three-tier pricing approach that called for consistently lower daily prices, month-long sales and periodic discounts on merchandise throughout the year. But starting Aug. 1, Penney will eliminate one of the monthly sales and bring back the word "clearance." Penney also plans to tweak its advertising to better communicate the pricing plan to customers.

The moves come at a time when shoppers ? and investors ? have voiced confusion over Penney's pricing strategy, which was spearheaded by CEO Ron Johnson when he took the helm in November. In May, Penney's stock plunged nearly 20 percent in its biggest decline in four decades after the retailer posted a larger-than-expected quarterly loss and a 20-percent drop in revenue on poor reception from shoppers for its pricing strategy.

The change also calls into question how patient Main Street and Wall Street will be with Johnson, a long-time retail executive who has been lauded for being the mastermind behind the success of Apple's retail stores and Target's cheap-chic strategy. The pricing plan is presenting a challenge for Johnson because it's turning out to be a tough sale to shoppers who have come to expect deep discounts and investors who are looking for Penney to turnaround its business quickly.

Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst for research firm NBG Productions, said since Johnson's strategy is long-term, investors likely will give him at least until 2013 to prove himself.

"With a visionary type of strategy like this you have to take a lot of painful medicine upfront," he said, adding that Johnson "is essentially trying to change the consumer mindset."

Johnson, who asked investors to be patient during a meeting with them in May, said he's confident that the pricing strategy will work. Johnson has acknowledged that Penney has a long way to go to convince shoppers that they don't have to wait for sales to get low prices at Penney, and he said this week that Penney's first-quarter sales drop is "the price we're paying to get integrity back."

"We thought simplifying 590 unique sale events into three types of pricing would be easier, but it turns out ... customers and others found the pricing a little confusing," he said. "Now we're going from 590 to 3 to 1: The first price is the right price."

Under the new system, Penney is keeping "Every Day" low prices that are consistently 40 percent lower than regular prices before the company eliminated sales. That level of pricing has account for about 70 percent of sales since the company began the new strategy, Penney said

It also will keep its periodic discounting events, which make up 15 percent of sales, but increase their frequency to every Friday. The company will also change the name of them from "Best Price" to "Clearance." And Penney will get rid of "Month Long" deals, which account for 15 percent of sales.

Johnson said the new approach should make the pricing plan easier for customers to understand.

"We thought: 'Why are we trying to teach customers new language to shop?'" he said. "We're just trying to be straightforward."

To go along with the new pricing, the company will tweak its ads. That will include inserts in newspapers every Friday during the back-to-school season that will highlight specific products like jeans. A TV ad will tout free haircuts that the stores will offer students during the back-to-school season.

The new ads are in stark contrast to the spots that Penney rolled out at first to introduce its new pricing plan. The "fair and square" brand campaign featured TV ads with dogs, kids and bright colors ? but little explanation of Penney's pricing.

In one TV spot, for instance, a dog continuously jumps through a hula hoop that a young girl is holding. The text reads: "No more jumping through hoops. No coupon clipping. No door busting. Just great prices from the start."

"In some ways marketing during the first six months entertained versus educated," Johnson said. Now, "the most important thing is to educate consumers on the price changes and make sure the core customer understands J.C. Penney still has products they love, at exceptional value, every day."

Penney, based in Plano, Texas, is hoping the tweaks to its pricing plan and advertising will help stem growing concern about whether Johnson's plan will help the retailer turn around its business.

The first sign that Penney's pricing strategy wasn't resonating with customers came in May when Macy's CFO Karen Hoguet told analysts that sales were rising at her company's stores that share malls with Penney stores.

A week later, J.C. Penney Co. reported that it lost $163 million, or 75 cents a share, in the three months ended April 28, compared with a profit of $64 million, or 28 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue dropped 20 percent to $3.15 billion for the quarter as customer traffic slipped 10 percent. Meanwhile, revenue at stores open at least a year ? a comparison used to measure a retailer's health ? fell 18.9 percent. That's much steeper than the 11.4 percent drop Wall Street was expecting.

A day after Penney reported the disappointing results, its stock fell 19.7 percent, or $6.57, to close at $26.75. That's the largest percentage drop for the company since at least January 1972, when FactSet's daily stock price records begin.

Investors, who initially sent Penney shares soaring 24 percent to about $43 after Johnson announced the pricing plan in late January, since have pushed them down about 37 percent since the beginning of the year. On Thursday, shares slipped another 33 cents to $21.67.

And earlier this month, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services lowered the retailer's credit rating into junk status, saying changes have yet to take hold

Magic is a very difficult thing to explain. Not just the actual rules?I don?t even make it that far. I?m talking about trying to explain Magic as an important part of your life.

As I become increasingly involved with the community, the people I know are growing more curious about what I?m doing. These are professors, fellow students, relatives?nongamers.

For a long time, I had no idea how to communicate the power of the game. Gavin Verhey framed it in terms of the benefits that a pro player experiences, but that?s not an accurate reflection of the average Magic player?s experience. I tried explaining the mechanics or the flavor, hoping to spark some of the awe that I first felt when discovering the game, but I was answered only by benignly puzzled smiles.

Then it occurred to me: When those mechanics and flavor first drew me in, I was fourteen years old. When I described them, I was trying to communicate a young teenager?s sense of wonder to adults. What I got out of the game then was completely different from what I get now and from these other people would be likely to be interested in.

So what was I getting out of the game now that I?m in my mid-twenties? And the answer came to mind immediately: a sense of community. To me, the community is key; I?m not the kind of person who sits at home planning new decks or playing Duels of the Planeswalkers. In my mind, to play Magic is to talk about Magic, to write about Magic, and to get together and celebrate it.

Now, when nongamers ask about the game, I instead talk about the community. I know that my well-being is linked to how connected I?m feeling to my communities of choice, and research bears this out (Nowell & Boyd 834). It seems that most people had no idea what a rich, connected culture surrounds this (relatively) simple game.

According to researchers, ?Sense of community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members' needs will be met through their commitment to be together? (McMillan 1976, qtd. in McMillan & Chavis 9).

They broke the sense of community into four separate elements: membership, integration and fulfillment of needs, influence, and a shared emotional connection. To understand (and explain) what the community does for you, it helps to look at these elements one by one:

Element 1: Membership

How do we fit in?

Membership may be the most straightforward of the four elements. As one researcher points out, the idea of the in-group ??.?.?.?intuitively seems to be a necessary part of any definition of community; to have a sense of community, one must first belong to a community? (Obst, Zinkiewicz, & Smith 89). However, real membership goes beyond artificial boundaries and labels. The concept encompasses several different factors that all contribute to a general feeling of belonging.

Self-identification is an important one?the fact that you play Magic doesn?t mean you identify with the group. In my Geek Shame article, I talked about how, when something like Magic is a passion of yours, it becomes a significant part of your identity. Likewise, the strong sense of group identity is an important part of membership. Not only are you a Magic player, but you can confidently say that Magic players are ?your group? (McMillan & Chavis 10).

That?s not really something you can say lightly. Investment is a key part of membership, and Magic is nothing if not an investment. We invested time and energy in learning a complex game and in seeking out a community to play in. We earned our spot there, and that makes both us and the people around us value our connection (McMillan, qtd. in McMillan & Chavis 10).

Element 2: Integration and Fulfillment of Needs

How do we help each other?

When I first read this section, I was confused by the integration part of integration and fulfillment of needs. Fulfillment of needs (or wants) made sense to me when I thought about my relationship with the community?I want a fun hobby, and the Magic community provides that. I want like-minded people to make friends with. I want a fun and encouraging environment to practice my writing and research skills. Clearly, many of my needs are being met. But what is this integration?

It became clear in the very last line of the section: ?A strong community is able to fit people together so that people meet others' needs while they meet their own.? (McMillan & Chavis 13). When two people come together to play, it?s not as if one is doing the other a favor?each needs an opponent, so their needs are in balance.

Likewise, new players need experienced players to show them the ropes (and often to provide them with their first cards), but experienced players need new players to keep the game alive. Local game stores and online communities connect people who wouldn?t otherwise be connected, giving people a chance to find what they need and share what they have.

It is becoming increasingly easy to find examples of people reaching a hand out to others within the community. Gamers Helping Gamers has begun distributing its scholarships. Last Saturday, a store ran a tournament to benefit a regular player who had been in a serious car accident. Magic already has a fairly strong sense of community for most people, but this is the area where I really anticipate seeing growth in the years to come.

Element 3: Influence

How do we affect each other?

Like the integration of needs, influence works both ways. Researchers report that a person needs to have some sway over the group in order to feel attracted to it. On the other hand, the group can?t be controlled entirely by the scattered whims of the members?to maintain coherence, there needs to be a flow back and forth between the individuals and the group (McMillan & Chavis 11).

Although group influence is often associated in people?s minds with peer pressure and forced conformity, not all group influence is bad. People are reassured by knowing that they share opinions with others and will align themselves with peers as much out of a personal desire for agreement as out of overt pressure (McMillan & Chavis 12).

If you choose your peer group carefully, this can provide stability and validation. Note the ?carefully??I picked up some unfortunate sexist habits during college that took years to shed. But for the most part, my Magic peers share values that are important to me?values like intellectualism, authenticity, and playfulness?and provide a gentle push back on track when I have moments of doubt.

However, it is also important for people to feel that they can be heard if the current situation really isn?t suiting them. For a community to be strong, there needs to be room for healthy individual differences. Being able to share your opinion and band with like-minded members creates a feeling of ownership that really makes this community ours (McMillan & Chavis 12).

Element 4: Shared Emotional Connection

How do we bond?

Finally, there?s the purely emotional component. An important part this is the idea of shared history. On one level, this can be a personal history: time you?ve spent interacting directly with other community members. I?ve made many close friends through Magic, both through repeated exposure and through going through difficult, tournament-based experiences together.

Unsurprisingly, positive interactions create strong bonds (Cook, qtd. in McMillan & Chavis 13). More interesting is the fact that the group members don?t necessarily need to experience the events directly. If they identify with it, they can be considered to be sharing it (McMillan & Chavis 13). We have folk heroes. We have our own legends. We have baffling cultural artifacts that we need someone senior to us to explain.

Magic provides many opportunities to build these emotional connections. The schedule runs like clockwork?articles on the mothership every weekday, Friday Night Magic every week, new sets four times a year with formalized and dramatized buildup.

You can structure Magic into your life as much or as little as you want, and there will be thousands of people doing it right alongside you. Twitter and smartphones have allowed us to share these events with people across the country or even the world more intimately than ever before.

Can?t make it to a prerelease? You can still enjoy the buildup of spoiler season. Grands Prix have virtual spectators all over the world. These events are recognized as important, which bonds together those involved. This leads to a community strong in emotional connection, which researchers feel ?seems to be the definitive element for true community? (McMillan & Chavis 14).

In Conclusion

In a recent Master?s thesis done on the Magic community, all twenty-nine of the recipients felt that Magic was ?more than just a game? (Limbert 86). Calling us Magic players at this point may be a bit of an understatement at this point?it would be more accurate to call us ?Magic experiencers.? (Somehow not quite as catchy.)

So the next time you want someone to understand why you play, when even Liz Cady?s brilliant description ?It's like chess, but you can choose which pieces you play with?and they're things like dragons and fireballs!" isn?t communicating the wonder of the game, try switching it up.

Talk about the feeling of fitting in. Talk about how we help each other, about what we teach and learn from each other, and about the bond between people who have shared experiences. Magic may be among the most complicated games in existence, but this is something anyone can understand.
