Ohio service planned for hero-astronaut Armstrong

(AP) ? Lunar pioneers plan to attend a private service in Ohio for astronaut Neil Armstrong, following an event to announce a children's health fund in his honor.

The first man to walk on the moon died last week at age 82. His family scheduled the private service Friday in Cincinnati. A public memorial service is being planned for early September in Washington, D.C.

Eugene Cernan (SIR'-nun) and James Lovell are expected at the announcement of the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to that fund or two scholarships in Armstrong's name.

Afterward, the former astronauts and others, NASA officials, family members, and friends will attend the private service. Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio will give the eulogy.

Cernan flew two moon missions and is the last man to have walked on the moon. Lovell's four space missions included commanding the harrowing Apollo 13 flight that was recounted in his book and depicted in the popular movie, in which Tom Hanks played Lovell.

A complete list hasn't been released, but other attendees will include Apollo astronaut William Anders and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

Cincinnati Children's spokesman Jim Feur said the hospital is still working out the details for the Armstrong fund. Cernan and Lovell were to be joined at the hospital by patient Shane DiGiovanna, 14. He has a rare tissue disease and received a cochlear implant that allows him to hear. The cochlear device was developed by a NASA scientist.

Armstrong's family described Armstrong, who largely shunned publicity after his moon mission, as "a reluctant American hero."

Raised in rural western Ohio in Wapakoneta, he developed an early love for aviation. He served as a U.S. Navy pilot flying combat missions in Korea, then became a test pilot after finishing college. Accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962, he commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966.

He then commanded Apollo 11's historic moon landing on July 20, 1969. As a worldwide audience watched on TV, Armstrong took the step on the lunar surface he called "one giant leap for mankind."

After his space career, he returned to Ohio, teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and generally avoiding public view for most of the rest of his life.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in suburban Indian Hill. He had two sons from a previous marriage.

Two UC student groups interested in space will gather Friday evening on a campus lawn with telescopes for viewing the moon, and to hear some of Armstrong's former students speak.

In announcing his death, Armstrong's family requested that when people "see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Romney promises a better future, focus on jobs

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney will promise voters a better future on Thursday, urging them to set aside their disappointment in President Barack Obama and join him in rebuilding an economy that generates jobs and protects retirement security.

Taking center stage with his address to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, Romney vowed to be a champion for small business and restore a sense of innovation in America.

"To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right," Romney said in excerpts of his speech released by the campaign.

"I am running for president to help create a better future. A future where everyone who wants a job can find one. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement," he said.

Romney's speech will be seen by a television audience numbering in the tens of millions, with some voters getting their first extended look at the former Massachusetts governor, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 2008.

Romney said he will intensely focus on creating new jobs and ridiculed Obama's promises from the 2008 campaign.

"What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs," Romney will say.

"President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family," he said.

In his speech, Romney, who can often come across as stiff, must inspire fellow Republicans, many of whom have shown little passion for him, and make the broader electorate feel more comfortable with him.

As portrayed by Democrats, Romney, 65, is alternately a heartless corporate raider, wealthy elitist, tax evader and policy flip-flopper who should not be trusted with the keys to the White House.

But in a "bounce" for Romney from the three-day convention in Tampa, Florida, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed him moving into a narrow lead over Obama -- 44 percent to 42 percent among likely voters. The Republican candidate had entered the week trailing Obama by four percentage points.

Movie star Clint Eastwood will bring a touch of Hollywood glamour to the convention, appearing as a surprise last-minute speaker to warm up the crowd for Romney, a Republican official said. Romney's speech will start at around 10:15 p.m. (0215 GMT).

Texas girl, 13, describes alleged sexual assaults

(AP) ? A 13-year-old Texas girl who authorities say was repeatedly sexually assaulted by 20 men and boys during a series of attacks two years ago cried Wednesday as a video of one of the encounters was played for jurors in the first case to go to trial.

The girl, testifying under a pseudonym, told jurors about two incidents, one in October 2010 and one the next month, in which 20-year-old defendant Eric McGowen and several other men and boys took turns having sex with her while recording the encounters on video.

McGowen, one of 14 adults accused of having sex with the girl during a nearly three-month span, is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The girl briefly broke down in tears as jurors were shown a few minutes of video of an alleged October 2010 sexual assault in a house in Cleveland, a small southeast Texas town where she and the defendants lived.

The girl, who was 11 at the time, said she was brought into what she described as the "baby room" in the house, and that McGowen and others took turns having sex with her. She said the video, which several jurors turned away from, was of her being assaulted by another man charged in the case.

"Did the guys just take turns with you?" prosecutor Joe Warren asked.

"Yes sir," the girl said.

The girl seemed calm for most of the roughly 1? hours she testified. She mostly gave short answers to questions, often pausing to stare at the floor or ceiling of the Liberty courtroom before responding.

She described another alleged rape that November that started in a different Cleveland home the defendants called the "boom boom" room, according to prosecutors, and that continued later at a nearby abandoned trailer.

Asked by Warren if more than 20 males might have assaulted her that day, the girl responded, "Probably."

She also told jurors that McGowen used a beer bottle on her during that incident.

Jurors were later shown police photos of used condoms and condom wrappers found inside and outside the house in the November incident.

McGowen's attorney, Matthew Poston, questioned the girl for about six minutes, during which he asked whether she twice told police early in the investigation that she never had sex with McGowen. The girl said she didn't remember saying that.

Prosecutors say the girl was assaulted on at least five occasions from mid-September through early December of 2010.

Eight of the 20 defendants accused in the case have pleaded guilty, including all six juveniles. A gag order has prevented prosecutors and defense attorneys from commenting.

Authorities began investigating that December after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he watched a cellphone video of her being raped in an abandoned trailer.

The case sparked outrage in Cleveland, a community of roughly 9,000 residents 45 miles northeast of Houston. Early in the investigation, some residents suggested the girl was partly responsible because they say she wore makeup, looked older than her age and wasn't properly supervised by her parents, drawing widespread condemnation.

The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

During opening statements Wednesday, Warren told jurors he would present them with videotaped and written confessions in which McGowen admitted to raping the girl.

"What took place to this girl was nothing better than a pack of animals attacking," Warren said.

On Tuesday, Poston tried but failed to get the confessions thrown out, arguing that police improperly questioned McGowen.

During his opening statement, Poston told jurors that the video evidence in the case doesn't show McGowen having sex with the girl.

"The truth in this case is not always what it seems," he said.

One of the two adults who pleaded guilty in the case received a 15-year prison term and the other is awaiting sentencing. The six juveniles each received 7-year prison terms that were suspended, putting them on probation for that amount of time.

Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Achieving Happiness in Your Physically Through Acupuncture Racine

Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique in which thin needles are inserted into certain locations on the physique in order to assist in the treatment and prevention of illness, pain, and disease. This ancient healing technique has been the predominant form of medicine in China for five-thousand years, and continues to be. Acupuncture is focused primarily on maintaining an environment for one?s body in which health can be achieved ? upon which point a lot of illness and disease completely disappear.

The W.H.O. believes that acupuncture is successful in treating many different illnesses, such as respiratory issues, ulcers, the common cold, migraines and headaches, eye problems, bronchial asthma, Meniere?s disease, Neurogenic bladder dysfunction, paralysis following stroke, Sciatica, Low back pain, Tennis elbow or Frozen shoulder, Gingivitis (gum disease).

Acupuncturists are aware and take heed of the fact that body & mind in addition to various emotions & the spirit, add a lot to the individualistic balance that our physique has. In other words, the balance of each individual?s body is very much so influenced by daily activities and the numerous stressors that the particular individual is exposed to on a daily basis.

This balance (or lack, thereof) can have a huge effect on the method in which we deal with various life experiences and stresses. Some of these stressors include nutritional issues, toxic living and working environments or ingesting and utilizing toxic foods/chemicals/beauty & hygiene products, stress caused by work & relationships, not getting enough exercise, and an unhealthy diet.

Acupuncturists seek out patterns of imbalance, disease, illness, and health in those that they treat. As the person?s unique patterns are found and addressed, many health issues disappear.

Being that a lot of diseases and illness are started by an imbalance in the physique, learning about one?s unique balance is the only method of being happy and healthy. Unlike the Western Medicine techniques of cut, radiate, and medicate ? Acupuncture goes to the source of the problem, and doesn?t only hide the symptoms of disease like Western medicine does.

Acupuncturists also use many different techniques to help the person in finding their unique personal balance and center. Finding the root of the illness is the apex priority. Once that is accomplished, illness and disease will begin to diminish, and life will start to have a new and refreshing look as good health surfaces.

In acupuncture, the energetic patterns of the body are also directly influenced in a ?good way?. It can help the physique in discovering balance so that it may recover from the disruptions of illness and disease. In addition, acupuncture helps to strengthen weakness within the physique that when left untreated, may result in vulnerability to disease and weakness, illness, and physical injury.

The qi energy (bodily energy) is very necessary for good wellbeing. Acupuncture helps in allowing the energy to flow uninhibited throughout your physique. If that energy is not freely flowing, you may more easily get ill. If an individual have too much energy, you will feel restlessness and anxiety. When there is a steady current of energy flowing throughout the body without hindrances, cumulative poisons in the body are properly eliminated and the physique can properly maintain its cleanliness and strength.

People who incorporate acupuncture into their lives experience a definite improvement in their health and wellbeing. In summary, acupuncture helps a body that is weak to become strong, and it helps the immune system in working properly and efficiently ? resulting in better happiness and health.

I write about my research info on online in a variety of health and wellbeing articles and blog posts which i write, and am continually expanding my circle online as well as health and wellbeing conventions & expos. My goal is to lead a good and nicely balanced lifestyle with positive people all around.

Samsung announces Series 5 and Series 7 Windows 8 tablets with S Pen apps, optional keyboards

Samsung announces Series 5 and Series 7 Windows 8 tablets with S Pen apps, optional keyboards

Samsung already showed off its Series 5 Hybrid back at Computex, but what we didn't know was that Sammy had yet another tablet / laptop mash-up in the works. The company just formally announced the Series 5 and it turns out it's going to be joined by the next-gen Series 7 Slate as well. (Also known as the ATIV tabs in regions outside the US.) The two 11-inch tablets more or less look alike, except the Series 5 is powered by an Atom-based Clover Trail processor, while the Series 7 packs Core i5 guts. Both support pen input, and will come with the same S Pen apps found on the Galaxy Note 10.1. As for that optional keyboard dock, Samsung previously touted its magnetic hinge, but the dock has since been retooled with a sturdier latch-based mechanism. (Check out the video below to see it in action -- the tablet really does seem incapable of falling out.)

As you can imagine, that difference in processor entails more than just different clock speeds. The two-watt Atom chip inside the Series 5 is rated for about nine hours of battery life, whereas the Core i5-powered Series 7 is expected to last between four and five hours on a charge. (The Series 5 is lighter, too, at 1.65 pounds, compared with 1.89 for the Series 7.) And, being a lower-powered device, the Series 5 has no vents. Last major difference: the Series 7 has a 1080p screen, while the Series 5's resolution tops out at 1,366 x 768.

On the software side, Samsung is loading all of its Win 8 systems with its various Media Hubs -- yes, just like the ones you'll find on the company's Android devices. You'll also find AllShare, a DLNA media-sharing app; S-Launcher, a widget that replicates the missing Start Menu in Windows 8; and eSettings, a centralized options menu for folks who maybe haven't learned where all the settings are in Win 8. As for those S Pen applications, you've got S Note, among other carry-overs from the Android side. As with the Note 10.1, the pen itself can recognize 1,024 degrees of pressure sensitivity.

Both tablets will arrive October 26th, the day Windows 8 starts shipping. The Series 7 will be available in one $1,119 configuration with 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and the keyboard. The Series 5, meanwhile, will cost $649, and will include 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid-state drive. If you like, you can purchase the keyboard for $99, or you can buy the two as a bundle for $749. We'll be back with reviews in October but until then, check out our walk-through below. (Note: we didn't get a chance to play with AllShare, the S Pen apps or the Hubs, but hopefully we can give you a more detailed demo of the software soon.)

What is Scuba Diving? ? Scubamans Travels

What is Scuba Diving?

Scuba Diving is one of the fastest growing industries that attracts millions of people every year. What really brings all divers everyday to enjoy these pass time is the adventure, feeling of exploration and the variety of colorful corals and other marine organisms.

We started diving a long time ago. The word diving is related to swimming underwater, and the word scuba is an abbreviation for ?self-contained underwater breathing apparatus? and it has become acceptable to refer to scuba as ?equipment? or ?apparatus?. So, we understand the word Scuba Diving as swimming underwater with special equipment.

A lot of people think, that the gas divers breathe while scuba diving is oxygen. Although the human body needs oxygen to survive, under pressure oxygen can be toxic. So, the gas divers use from the tank is compressed normal air. Air is composed of 78.084% of nitrogen, 20.946% of oxygen and 1% of other gases that have little or no effect when breathing compressed air.

Nitrogen under high pressure can temporally effect our nervous system and interfere with signal transmissions, causing at greater depths (30 to 40 meters/100 to 133 feet or more) the condition known as nitrogen narcosis, which has similar effects as being under the influence of alcohol ( loss of decision-making ability, loss of focus, impaired judgment, multi tasking and coordination).

The most straightforward way to avoid nitrogen narcosis is for a diver to limit the depth of dives. If narcosis does occur, the effects disappear almost immediately upon ascending to a shallower depth.

In addition to its narcotic effects, nitrogen also brings another issue. Under pressure nitrogen dissolves into body tissues and starts to accumulate.

This need to be kept in limits to avoid nitrogen from coming from answer plus forming bubbles inside the body, well-known as ?decompression sickness? or ?the bends?- whenever all stress produced by the nitrogen is introduced at the surface.

To avoid the bends divers must minimize the water pressure slowly on the body at the end of the each dive. This will allow the gases trapped in the bloodstream to gradually break solution and leave the body. This is done by ascending slowly and making safety stops or decompression stops using dive computers or decompression tables for guidance.

As you can see while scuba diving, divers are limited in time and depth due to the nitrogen in the air. Today thanks to new technology we have managed to extend our limits. For those divers that exceed 40 meters/133 feet and for divers who need to spend a lot of time under water, a different mixture of gases, training and equipment are required.

The depth limit for recreational diving is between 30 to 40 meters/100 to 133 feet, but it also depends on the training and the gases used while underwater. Nuno Gomes (South Africa) currently holds the world record for the deepest dive using scuba diving equipment. The dive of 318 meters / 1044 feet beat the previous record set by the late John Bennet of 308 meters /1016 feet (confirmed). The total dive time was 12 hours and 20 minutes, while the descent took 14 minutes. French diver Pascal Bernab? claims to have dived to 1,083 feet (330 m) in July, 2005 (unconfirmed). The above records were set using ?recreational? SCUBA. Commercial divers can go to depths greater than 500 meters / 1650 feet using specialized commercial and military diving equipment and support systems.

What is important to remember that being underwater has limits and risks that professional divers are willing to take. And remember that recreational scuba diving is for fun. Dives between 5 to 20 meters/ 16 to 66 feet can show you the wonderful world that was once explored by Cousteau. These depths have the advantage that provides divers with better light, colors and marine life. Also in shallow dives you will breathe less air from the tank, making your dive longer and safer.

Keep it safe.

Have fun while diving, from: Ronnie Lampole Padi MSDT and Roma DM owners of http://www.ScubaDivingFanClub.com Where Scuba Divers share their passion.

New to the world of Leukemia | The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ...

Hi and welcome to the board you never want to join.? Sorry you had to find your way here; and this diagnosis is so new to you your head must be spinning.? Your emotions are totally understandable and we've all cycled through some variation of how you feel.

?

My daughter was diagnosed 7/30/10 with high risk Pre B ALL and will be done with treatment 11/30/12.? She was almost 12 at dx, but has Down syndrome and is not near her chronological age cognitively.? Every child reacts differently, but the first four weeks were absolutely miserable for Lauren.? I'd say the first four weeks were miserable, the next two weeks were bad, and then she started feeling better and the bad times were not as long lived.? They were just now and then.

?

I seriously wondered if it was worth treating her the first couple weeks because she was so miserable.? She was in pain, had mouth sores, sores on her rectum, lost control of her bladder and bowels, her bones ached and she screamed every time she sat on the toilet.? Between the meds, the IV fluids, the medication for high blood pressure and to help her kidneys and liver she was a MESS.? Every time she walked to the bathroom she moaned and cried.? She was zoned out in her own little world and it was awful.? I felt like I had "lost" her and didn't know if she'd ever come back.? It felt like her sparkly little soul had died.? But the good news is, she came back!? Her old sparkly little self started to come back about 4 weeks into treatment.? We also were able to take her off the meds for blood pressure and kidney and liver after about 4 weeks.? There were still some rough times, but not as consistently bad.? After that first month we were up and down, had times she felt good enough to go out for a movie and to restaurants, etc.? She missed all but a few days of school that entire school year, but I don't think any time during treatment was as bad for her as the beginning.?

?

I have never heard that a 2 year old can't be in pain or nauseated.? And quite frankly, I don't believe it and would tell your team that.? I'm sure there are other people on this board who have young children and I'll be surprised if they say their child didn't experience pain.? Think about the different cries babies and toddlers have. With my 2 year old grandson I can tell if his cry means he is just trying to get attention, he is tired, or he is in pain.? We used oxycodone in the first couple months for pain and then haven't needed it much since.? We also used zofran to control nausea and vomiting.? We still have to use zofran and bendadryl when she has spinals or she gags and retches for hours afterwards.?

?

Best of luck to you.? There is also a Facebook group called A.L.L. Moms that is a wealth of information and allows for quicker replies.? You need to be a FB friend of someone in the group to join.? Email me at robbieharding@aol.com if you want to join the group.

Pistorius plays down 100m defence prospects

Oscar Pistorius on Tuesday played down his chances of defending his 100m Paralympic title, assessing that it could be the most open -- and fastest -- final in Paralympic history.

The 25-year-old South African, a triple gold medallist in the T44 100m, 200m and 400m in Beijing, made history earlier this month by becoming the first double amputee to compete at the Olympics.

But Pistorius said he would be happy for a medal of any colour in the 100m this time round, with the final likely to involve world record holder Jonnie Peacock and world champion Jerome Singleton.

Pistorius said he had been "more than impressed" with Britain's Peacock, who in June lowered the world record for single leg amputees to 10.85sec.

"He's a huge threat. But my personal opinion is that experience counts," he told a news conference at the Olympic Park.

"Guys like Jerome Singleton (of the United States, whom Pistorius narrowly beat in Beijing) have run 11.1 in the last year.

"He (Singleton) is a true professional, a very serious guy. He doesn't let competition get the better of him.

"He's going to be just as much of a challenge. He's one of the only athletes to beat me in the 100."

Event organisers have billed the T44 100m final as the race of the Paralympics, with predictions that all eight runners could break 11 seconds for the first time.

Pistorius said the development of athletes in the event since Athens and Beijing had been "phenomenal", particularly in terms of physique, while margins between runners are now measured in hundredths of a seconds, not seconds.

"There are six guys in my opinion or maybe someone else" would could win, he added.

"There isn't a favourite in the event and that's that. That makes it very exciting.

"The 100 is going to be a challenge for me... If I can finish in the top three I will be happy."

He added: "It's important to note that I haven't run a 100m personal best in five years. It's not really my event.

"As Jonnie and those guys focus on the 100, my focus is on the 400, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to sprinting.

"I like to see the evolution of the event happening and if that means I'm not at the top of the event but the sport's getting quicker, that's OK with me."

Pistorius still holds the T43 100m world record -- for double-amputee athletes -- with a mark of 10.91 set in 2007, although American Blake Leeper equalled that time this year.

The South African comes into the Paralympics on the back of a semi-final appearance in the Olympic 400m before he anchored the South African quartet in the 4x400m relay.

The athlete, dubbed the "Blade Runner" because he runs on carbon fibre blades, said he was in form, despite suggestions that he may be tired after the Olympics.

"I have had 22 races this year. The Olympics was obviously very important, as are the Paralympics," he explained.

"In essence, we run internationally from May all the way through to September. I ran my second-fastest time last year in September. It doesn't really matter...

"I'm in the right shape... I feel in great condition to be able to perform here."

Searching for My Fairy Tale | Dr. Dar, Individual & Couples ...

Ask Dr. Dar: ?I have much to offer like the girls in the fairytales, so when will it be my time to ride off into the sunset?

As a child, I loved all of the Disney princesses.? From Snow White to Pocahontas all the way to Mulan and Cinderella, I was quite infatuated with their love stories. Although I knew they were cartoons with fictitious story lines, something deep inside believed I could live out their fairytale romance. If Disney could paint such a beautiful portrait of a ?happy ending?, why couldn?t I?

After watching each story, I recall telling my mother, ?that will be me one day?. Early on, she would laugh. That laugh grew to a smile which soon became a frown. She replied one day in the most direct way that she could, ?Girl you better stop living in that fantasy world. Those are cartoons. You are a real person. Nothing in this world, including love, will come easy.? And that was that.

Naturally my dreams were crushed, but mother knows best, right? The teenage years would come and go along with failed relationships. I worked so hard to hold on to each romance and they all slipped through my fingers. My aggressiveness along with a harsh approach has pushed men away. It?s like I exude some sort of a man repellent.

?Now in my adult years I?m searching for the perfect ending. I am sure that my mother?s early advice wasn?t there to harm me, but now as a woman, I control my fate. I have much to offer like the girls in the fairytales, so when will it be my time to ride off into the sunset?

Dear Fairy Tale lover,

Your time to ride off into the sunset is NOW! ?

Fairy tales were first created by authors through their dream. ?They then had to write the story, create all the pictures, write the script, hire the actors for voice overs, film each frame, put the film together, edit it to perfection, advertise the film, ?promote it, get the actors to promote it, get it into theaters, pay everyone, manage budgets, etc. ?A lot of work went into creating the fairy tale from start to happily ever after?in fact a lot of work that goes into relationships as well.

To have your own fairy tale, you must first dream it, then write your story, then take positive action every day towards your dream. ?Let go of the thoughts and fears that are holding you back. ?I hear singles say things like: ?Dating is hard, there are no good men or women out there, I have been hurt and am not going to put myself out there, etc. ? While I acknowledge your experience is real, I also say that the story you are writing in your life is what is creating your reality. ?I suggest you write a different story than the one your mind is telling you to create. ?If you believe there are no good men out there, then you will naturally start looking at men who are a better fit for you. ? Write your fairy tale story instead of using someone?else?s story! ?You can start today by getting a copy of Stop Being Single Now.

Helping smart people find and create lasting relationships.

Inspire the World ? A Handbook for Fitness & Wellness Professionals

I got an email from IDEA Health & Fitness Association today challenging its members.? Their motto is ?Inspire the World to Fitness?.? They are asking their members to submit pictures of themselves holding up signs that reflect that motto, all while actually doing something inspiring.? I used to wonder what people meant when they would say that someone or something is inspiring.? Luckily that was a long time ago, because I know what it means to me now.? Whenever I witness someone or something that gives me the urge to act, move, or make a difference ? I know I am inspired.

Working in the field of fitness or wellness, we are called to inspire different people for different reasons.? In the world of cardiac or physical rehabilitation, it might mean we inspire confidence in a patient so they can trust us to help them push themselves to get better. In other settings, it means we are working with people to make small but meaningful changes in their behavior.? Other situations might have us motivating and inspiring people to take responsibility for their choices.

If you are meant to be inspiring others, who or what inspires you?? My list could go on, but here are just a few, in no particular order.? I encourage you to make a list of people, situations, organizations or otherwise that you can draw inspiration from.

My kids:? They inspire me to get out of bed a little bit earlier, even when I don?t want to.? They motivate me to spend considerably more time on food choices and preparation to improve overall health.? They help me keep my priorities straight, and remind me how important it is to laugh everyday.

My husband and other public school educators: I believe that being a public school educator has to be one of the hardest jobs I can think of.? To educate and inspire kids to engage in and love learning has got to be daunting.? They inspire me to keep learning, keep an open mind, and remind me how important it is to critically think when analyzing things.

My mom: After having 13 children, and celebrating her 80th birthday, she is still zipping around.? She is passionate about her faith and education and is the biggest smart alec I know.? I am amazed by her ability and willingness to accept change and grow with it. Not only is she keeping up with the Kardashians, she?s texting, Facebooking, and more.

People living with mental illness:? I am inspired by people who face the challenge of living with mental illness everyday.? There is a significant stigma and misunderstanding when it comes to mental illness in our society.? Anyone who can get up and face the challenges that mental illness can bring, one day at a time, is inspiring to me.

The students I work with:? Anytime I find myself feeling a little burned out with work, I come across a student who has enthusiasm an excitement for their profession. This reignites my fire to continue to learn and grow as a lifelong student myself.? They keep me on my toes.

Ralph Nader:? Ralph Nader is an American political activist, as well as an author, lecturer, and attorney. He is ?David? usually taking on ?Goliath? with particular concern for consumer protection, humanitarianism, the environment and the democratic process.

Oscar Pistorius: Anyone who watched the 2012 Olympics knows who this guy is and why he is inspiring.

Bill Gates:? I am not inspired by his influence or money.? What I am inspired by is how he refused to take no for an answer, and how he chooses to share his wealth with those who need it.

My list could go on??Who or what made yours?

Biden scraps trip to site of Republican convention

Vice President Joe Biden has canceled a trip to Tampa, with Tropical Storm Isaac threatening the Florida host city of the Republican National Convention, the Democratic campaign said.

President Barack Obama's reelection campaign cited "disaster preparedness and local security concerns," for putting off the trip that had been set for Monday, as a visit by the vice president would require significant mobilization of local law enforcement and federal authorities.

The change in schedule "is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm, as well as those attending the activities in Tampa," the Obama campaign said in a statement.

But Biden is still scheduled to visit two cities further north in the battleground state of Florida -- Orlando and St. Augustine -- on Tuesday, though that trip remains "subject to change due to weather-related precautions."

At the Republican event, which runs Monday to Thursday, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan will be formally named candidates for the November 6 presidential election.

Obama and Biden will be confirmed as the Democratic candidates at their party's convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 3 to 6.

Tropical Storm Isaac was roaring toward impoverished Haiti, where it was set to make landfall later Friday. Although its trajectory is still disorganized, it could near the Florida coast, including Tampa.

Lance Armstrong and Gary Kasparov: Explaining heroes to your child

Lance Armstrong and Gary Kasparov: A mom has to pick up the pieces in explaining the bad breaks for her children's heroes in the past week.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / August 24, 2012

Lance Armstrong has stopped his fight against the charges by the USADA that he allegedly violated doping regulations. One mom has had to contemplate how to explain the bad breaks her children's heroes have had in the past week.

Christophe Ena/AP

My husband and I have raised our four sons to be keen on two things: chess and cycling. This week, two of their mightiest heroes have fallen, and we are faced with exploring their actions and the apparent lack of something all children prize highly ? fairness. First grandmaster Garry Kasparov was jailed in Russia during a social protest, and today seven-time Tour de France Winner Lance Armstrong, who has fought mountains and his own body, gave up the fight over doping allegations.

"Mom, this is the worst week ever," said Quin, age eight, when he heard about Mr. Armstrong. "Did he really cheat? That would stink. How could he just give up if he didn?t do it?" A moment later he added, "And have we figured out if that grandmaster is going to jail for biting a police officer?"

Both these men are heroes to my boys and both have always been highly controversial figures. Explaining two major falls ? albeit quite different kinds ?? in a week has been a challenge.

Kasparov became the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985 at the age of 22 by defeating then-champion Anatoly Karpov. He has had long-term battles with chess' governing body FIDE over political issues and has become a loud voice in and outside Russia against President Vladimir Putin. The answer about Kasparov was easier than the one about Armstrong.

I explained that Kasparov recently announced he would run for the presidency of the Russian Chess Federation against President Vladimir Putin's man. Kasparov made Putin angry and suddenly Kasparov is arrested, beaten, and accused of something crazy. I believe the police dog bit the officer. Quin's response was, "But that's not fair!" Sometimes life's not fair.

Today I find myself at the dining room table with my husband and sons poring over every detail of the decision made by Armstrong to stop fighting the charges leveled by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that could cost him his seven Tour de France titles. His entire career has been dogged internationally by charges of illegal doping, yet he passed every test. He has decried the USADA's practices as a "one-sided and unfair process." This is an American quasi-governmental agency that appears to have little oversight and perhaps not the actual authority to overrule the International Cycling Union, which has been backing Armstrong in this fight.

SKorean court rules Samsung didn't copy iPhone

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korean phone maker Samsung won a home court ruling Friday in its global patent battle against Apple and its popular iPhone and iPad devices.

Judges in Seoul said Samsung Electronics Co. didn't copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, the judges also said Samsung violated Apple's technology behind a feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

The Seoul Central District Court ruling called for a partial ban on products from both companies, though the verdict did not affect the latest-generation phones ? Apple's iPhone 4S or Samsung's Galaxy S III ? or the newest iPad. Both sides were also ordered to pay limited damages.

The ban applies only to sales in South Korea, and the ruling is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation unfolding in nine countries. The biggest stakes are in the U.S., where Apple is seeking $2.5 billion from Samsung over allegations it has created illegal knockoffs of iPhones and iPads.

The South Korean ruling is not expected to affect the U.S. case. On Friday, a federal jury in San Jose, California, began its third day of deliberations. A federal judge has ordered jurors there to refrain accessing any news regarding the two companies.

Nonetheless, the Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents. Those arguments previously have been shot down by courts in Europe, where judges have ruled that they are part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."

The ruling ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the original iPad and the iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, saying that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications technology. South Korea is not a big market for Apple.

The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, ruling that big rectangular screens in cases with rounded corners had existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.

"It is not possible to assert that these two designs are similar based only on the similarity of those features," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean and translated into English by The Associated Press. It also said individual icons in the Samsung products do not appear similar to the icons Apple used in the iPhone.

But the court ruled that Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents, covering the bounce-back feature. The court banned sales of Samsung products using the technology, including the older Galaxy S II, in South Korea.

Court spokesman Kim Mun-sung said the court's ruling was to take effect immediately, although companies often request that sanctions be suspended while they evaluate their legal options, such as an appeal.

Nam Ki-yung, a spokesman for Samsung, said the ruling "affirmed our position that one single company cannot monopolize generic design features."

Apple did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment.

The court ordered each company to pay monetary compensation to its competitor. Samsung must pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000) while Apple must pay its rival 40 million won.

Some industry watchers expressed concern over the South Korean ruling to protect industry standard patents. They say the decision could invite a trade war by giving Samsung and fellow South Korean company LG Electronics Inc. ? both industry standard patent holders ? more room to block rivals' entrance into South Korea if they don't agree to licensing terms.

"It would mean that foreign companies would either have to bow to Samsung's and LG's demands ... or stop selling in Korea," said Florian Mueller, a patent expert in Munich, Germany, who has been closely following the case.

Courts in Europe, including Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany, have rejected similar claims by Samsung that Apple violated its wireless patents, with judges arguing that the patents have become part of industry standards. Standard-essential patents are a crucial technology for new players to make products compatible with the rest of the market and must be licensed under fair and reasonable terms.

Europe's antitrust regulator launched an investigation earlier this year into whether Samsung was failing to license those patents under fair and reasonable terms.

In Friday's ruling, the South Korean court said Samsung did not abuse its market power as an industry standard patent holder.

Samsung, which is based in Suwon, South Korea, filed a complaint in South Korea against Apple shortly after Apple filed its lawsuit in the U.S.

Apple claims some of Samsung's smartphones and tablet computers are illegal knockoffs of Apple's iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the allegations and argues that all companies in the cutthroat phone industry mimic each other's successes without crossing the legal line. Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, wants $2.5 billion and Samsung's most popular products pulled from the U.S. market.

The battle is more complex as Apple and Samsung are not only competitors in the fast-growing global market for smartphones and tablet computers, but also have a close business relationship.

Samsung, the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips and liquid crystal displays, supplies some of the key components that go into Apple products, including mobile chips that work as a brain of the iPhone and the iPad.

The South Korean firm overtook Apple in less than three years in smartphone markets. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung sold 50.2 million units of smartphones, nearly twice as many as Apple's 26 million units, according to IDC.

Despite the ruling that is widely seen as Samsung's victory, Samsung's share fell 0.9 percent in Seoul.
